9/11, The Media, and The Muslim World
As part of the American University Honors Program, I completed a research project in the second semester of my sophomore year for the required Challenge Course class. My group and I focused on how the post-9/11 media change has created a perpetual cycle of fear in the American people and culture regarding terrorism and the Muslim world. For our final project, we created a podcast series where we spoke to members of the news media, Muslim associations, and academia to look at this issue from multiple perspectives.
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Ruth Fremson joins Trevor and Lia to discuss photojournalism's role in informing audiences' worldviews, and how photojournalists can cover frightening and tense situations with sensitivity.
In this episode, former NY1 anchor and reporter Kristen Shaughnessy joins Lia, Ava, and Ian to discuss her role in covering 9/11 on the ground in New York, and how the media can more objectively report on marginalized groups, including Muslims and Muslim-Americans.
